What is the Statistics Competition?

Statistical Competition 2020 PosterThe Statistics Competition is a competition organized by the Statistical Service of Cyprus, the Directorate of Secondary General Education of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports and Youth, the University of Cyprus and the Cyprus Statistical Society, with the aim to promote statistical literacy, curiosity and interest in official statistics among students and teachers. It is a part of the European Statistics Competition organized by volunteering NSIs and Eurostat.

The main objectives of the competition are to promote curiosity and interest in statistics among students, to encourage teachers to use new materials for teaching statistics by promoting the use of real data provided by official statistics and search for applications of acquired statistical knowledge. Moreover, it aims to show the role of statistics to students and teachers in various aspects of society, and to promote teamwork and collaboration among students to achieve common goals.

The competition will be structured in two phases: a national competition organized by the national authorities and the European final organized by Eurostat. The winners of the national competition of each country are eligible to take part in the European final. The languages of the national competition will be Greek and English while the European final will be in English.

The national competition will take place during the period October 2019 – March 2020 and the European final between April and May of 2020.

    National phase:

    • Registration period: from October 21th to November 29th, 2019.
    • Testing period for the first assignment: January 10th, 2020.
    • Publication and communication of the results of the first assignment: January 24th, 2020.
    • Submission of the second assignment: from January 27th to March 6th, 2020.
    • Announcement of winning teams: March 27th, 2020.
    • Award ceremony: April 9th, 2020.
      Due to the protection measures taken against the coronavirus, the awards ceremony on April 9, 2020 has been canceled. The organizing committee will arrange the award of the prizes in due time.

    European phase:


    • Announcement of European topic: Aril 7th, 2020.
    • Registration period: between April 7th to 24th, 2020.
    • Assignment period: from April 27th to July 15th, 2020.
    • Announcement of winning teams: September 7th, 2020.


    The Statistics Competition is open to all secondary-age students of officially recognized educational institutions of Cyprus. Participation will take place in two categories:

    • Category A: Upper Secondary [A',B',C' Lyceum* and up to 18 years on 31/12/2019]
    • Category B: Lower secondary [A',B',C' Gymnasium and up to 16 years on 31/12/2019]

    * Students attending the seventh grade of an educational institution are allowed to participate in the Upper Secondary Category provided that they comply with the age restriction.

    Participation is free of charge and there can be a maximum of 4 teams from the same institution.

    Students will work in teams of 2 to 3, all of them from the same school and category. All teams must have a teacher from their school acting as a tutor, who will supervise their work and generally perform a coordinating role and communicate with the organizers. The tutors can supervise up to 2 teams.


    National phase:

    The winning teams of the national phase, one from the Category A and one from the Category B will receive the following prizes:

    • For the tutor: A tablet.
    • For each student of the winning team: The amount of €200.

    The teams in the second place of the national phase, one from the Category A and one from the Category B will receive the following prizes:

    • For the tutor: An external disc.
    • For each student of the team: The amount of €50.

    In addition the jury may grant a mention to any team.

    In case of having two winning teams with the same tutor, the tutor will only receive one prize.

    European phase:

    Each member and the tutor of the two winning teams of the European final (categories A and B) will receive the following prizes:

    • A gift card (€400).
    • A set of publications and promotional material from Eurostat.
    • A winner diploma.

    All the teams that will participate in the European phase will receive a diploma.

    The award ceremony will be during the European Conference of Quality in Official Statistics (Q2020) which will take place in Budapest (Hungary), from 9th to 12th of June 2020. (Expenses of the trip to the award ceremony are included in the prize).
